11/8/2023 0 Comments Digikam vs xnviewIt's not very stable (crashes when running it), nor accurate (face recognition never is), but it got a lot of false matches and mixed them in with the previous confirmed matches I'd prefer it put new matches in a separate queue for review first. it only can be run across your whole collection (catalog). DigiKam has a facial-recognition system which can be run. In XnView one has to run a batch export in DigiKam you hit Edit, Post-Processing, and adjust the saturation.ĭ. in Imagine Viewer (a different app) pressing shift-G will do it. neither has a instant way to get a black & white preview of an image. That said, browsing through my collection in DigiKam is usually instantaneous.Ĭ. XnView is much faster initially launching, and sometimes a bit faster browsing. However, DigiKam does allow keyboard shortcuts to be added to individual tags I will probably start using that.ĭigiKam also has GeoTagging features and a globe/map view with zooming, as well as date-based views and timelines.ī. There is a 'quick access list' which looks like the sets in XnView, but I can't seem to use it while tagging - I'm really not sure what it's for (maybe it's a work in progress?). tagging is easier in XnView you can create tag sets/collections and easily see them in a small area of the screen.ĭigiKam only seems to be able to show the tag tree during tagging, which doesn't fit on my screen without scrolling. star rating + color + tags) which XnView simply cannot do.Ī. Note I've never really used Lightroom (but I have seen demos of it's capabilities) so this is mostly about my DAM needs and comparing my experience with XnView MP and a few simpler image viewers.ĭigiKam is mostly what I expect in a DAM with great search capabilities, including multiple filters at once (e.g. Unless you add them as Collections, you will never see the Program Files folder, nor the AppData Roaming folder, nor 11,029 other unnecessary folders - only ever the ones you enter as Collections (which immediately display as Albums) it's really quite ingenious actually.I was using XnView MP as a DAM, but its search capabilities are very rudimentary.Īfter a bit of a search for a new DAM (see ), I've chosen DigiKam, and have been using version 4.12 on Windows (it also runs on OSX and Linux (KDE)) for a few weeks. You can see it and all of it's subfolders want to see some more = add some more "Collections" However, once you get the hang of it, digiKam only sees - and you only see in digiKam - the folders you point it toward by first "Adding a Collection" which immediately shows up as an Album in the Albums pane - it's just a simple folder nothing more and nothing less. Nowhere in digiKam is a folder called a folder they are called "Albums", "Directories", and "Collections" just to name a few.Īnother unfamiliar stumbling block is that digiKam does not offer a typical folder tree structure as soon as the program is opened, listing every last folder in the entire system that in itself sorts of throws up a big roadblock right from the get-go. I agree that for a first-time user digiKam is quite confusing and, I believe that most of that confusion comes from them using fifteen different terms that all simply mean a plain old folder. It is a pity that the devs don't seem to have any idea about how to design an easy to understand and use UI I gave up on it, although it seems to have a lot of functionality I just found digiKam too difficult and clunky and confuising and time-consuming to understand and use.
